I’m not one to say “should” or “shouldn’t”. I do know that there are scientifically-proven benefits to feeling happy, and if something makes you happy, you would be doing yourself good to allow yourself to enjoy it. 9. Character How often have you thought about what kind of person you want to be, or how you want to be remembered? The classic movie and book, A Christmas Carol, always makes me think about what impression people have that I might not know they have about me. Did you ever picture yourself at your funeral? What do you think people would say? What would you want them to say? This is simply because candidates with raw talent don’t have the experience to fall back on when things go awry, which isn’t usually a problem for others with more experience. For example, if an employee worked at the same company for 30 years and was let go from his position, chances are that his experience will speak for itself when looking for another job. While his experience doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll be more productive, he’ll likely be the most dedicated employee you’ll get. Everyone’s  got an ego: What business owners tend to forget when recruiting is that whether they choose raw talent or experience, everyone will have an ego. Don’t get me wrong experience can be great to have on your side as a startup    however, an employee’s ego can easily damage their job performance, as well as office culture. Even raw talent can have an ego, possibly even bigger than that of a more experienced individual. While they may not carry a full resume or have a college education, they’re naturally talented, which can even make them more ego-worthy. Why you didnt get the job - Yesterday, I got on my soapbox and ranted about the fact that there is no one right way to search for a job. It might be nice (or maybe not), but there are so many people and twice as many opinions involved in every job posting, resume review, interview and hiring decision. As promised, today a look at why you didnt get the job from my friend Stephanie Lloyd, Consultant on Talent Acquisition strategies and Owner of Calibre Search Group. Stephanie   wrote a great post on her blog, Radiant Veracity. Its called 75 Reasons You Didnt Get the Job. (Stephanie is also a National Careers Workplace Columnist for Examiner.com.) Before you start to sweat and feel overwhelmed, the point of Stephanies list is to remind job seekers that, sometimes, the reason they do not land the job is more about the organization and situations than about any one specific thing that a job seeker does in the process. A sample: Youre not qualified. Youre overqualified. You were overdressed. You were underdressed. The job was filled internally. The job was put on hold. See? You cant please everyone all of the time. The fact is, personal preferences will enter into the process, and every individual has his or her own likes and dislikes. And, you dont control when and if an employers needs change. Its up to the job seeker to react flexibly in this ever-changing environment and to move deftly through the process. I DO believe that every job seeker controls his or her own destiny, despite the fact that there may be aspects that you cannot change. Have you really done everything you can to improve your chances? Yesterday, I spoke to a potential client who was really doing most everything right, but I advised her how to ramp-up her networking and to improve her online presence by writing a blog.
